engine clunk at low revs in nuetral

Post  andyhutchinson91 on Sun Sep 28, 2014 7:12 am

Hi guys, had my bike for around 2 weeks and noticed this morning whilst warming up around 1500 revs theres a clunk coming from the top end I think? Its not constant and isn't effecting the bike or its power, but I don't like it Neutral , is there anything you can suggest to look at and check?

Thanks andy

Is it while it's sat warming up or whilst you are riding it ?

It's sat warming up and just idling in general. I have the revs set about 1200 but when rev it a little in neutral up to around 1500 there's a clunk can't hear it when riding it though.

Will it make the noise if you keep the clutch pulled in ?

Hi just checked it now and yes still clunks with the clutch pulled in Sad
just had another listen and if you put slight revs on say 1500-2000 and hold it there its like its jumpy and wants to cut out for a split second then goes back to normal for a few seconds and so on, you can see the light dimming when it does it. could it be something like the exhaust valves or something like that? it has an mtc can on it.

Which lights dim?
When when did it last have plugs and carbs balanced ?
You could be describing a miss fire

It's the headlight that dims slightly. I only bought it 3 weeks ago so iv not done anything to it. It runs fine, no loss of power or anything. Would a miss fire have a clunking in the engine? Sorry I'm new to all this stuff..... my last bike ran fine haha

Depends on your interpretation of a clunk and mine tbh
Can you take a video and post it up ?
Might give us a clue as long as the sound quality is ok

here is a video..... finally got round to doing it.

Im not sure its my engine now im more swaying to my carbs, but would they make a noise like this? My choke doesn't seem as responsive as my last bikes either as in it doesn't rev high when its hot and the bike just cut out 5 mins after it warmed up, but then started straight away.  Suspect

Hard to tell from the video to be definite . But what mileage is on her? From here it sounds like one of 2 things. Spitting back though the carbs ( miss fire or imbalance) or poss cam chain slack.

It's done around 41k so pretty high. It pops quiet a lot with the with the mtc can on it, do you think balancing the carbs and replacing the plugs would do anything? And someone I know said it sounds like my cam chains slack. Silly question but do I just tighten it with the bolt on the back of the engine or is it more technical? Iv got the Haynes as well so will do a bit aloft reading

Some cm chain tensioners can stick and also a lot of peeps on certain bikes convert to manual tensioners . Read you Haines on the tensioner and how to check / adjust and yes still worth a balance of the carbs

Hi guys, right so up to now iv tried balancing the carbs and all its reading is vacuum problems on all 4?? Neutral so I took the carbs off to inspect them all 1 at a time, couldn't find no major issues but were the first carb connects to the engine (clutch side) there was a puddle of petrol in the engine, could the be the float? Reset the jets to standard settings as well because they was all over the spot (standard 3 turns out a cording to haynes) put everything back together after a good clean...... still tapping like it was..... gutted. Think I'm going to take it to a garage when the weather's better
